Consumer Perceptions of Generative Artificial Intelligence in 8 Charts

November 2023
Chart Pack

Report summary

This collection of charts sheds light on how consumer perceptions of generative artificial intelligence applications have evolved over 2023.

Generative AI is everywhere you look in the world of tech, from online search to shopping recommendations to robotics. Most consumers agree that AI integrations are the future of technology and express more interest in AI applications than in other recent tech trends such as Web3 or the metaverse. But people also have deep reservations about the technology and are concerned about its potential misuse.

For brands navigating this space, it will be crucial to identify which AI applications consumers find most helpful, and which ones they feel most threatened by.

Chart Pack highlights:

  • Many people agree that AI is the future, but fewer are convinced that society is ready for widespread use of the technology. More than half of U.S. adults (53%) agree that “AI integrations into products and services are the future of technology,” but just 31% say society is ready for that future.
  • The most interesting applications help people without replacing them. AI applications that act as assistants are most likely to be interesting to consumers but also carry the risk of replacing people entirely.
  • Different generations have different interests in AI. Millennials tend to express interest in a broader range of AI applications relative to other generations, including Gen Z.
  • With so much potential for misuse, AI has a trust issue. Roughly 3 in 5 U.S. adults (59%) say they trust AI “only a little,” “not much,” or “not at all” to respect their data privacy.
